Malawi Open beckons Dar golfers

AS the invitation for Seed-Co Lilongwe Open Golf tournament has been tabled, domestic professional golfers’ trip to Malawi is in drought as they struggle to find sponsors to back their travel for the event.
The Seed-Co Malawi Limited sponsored tournament is scheduled to commence on November 24th and climax on 27th this year at Lilongwe Golf Course in Malawian capital.
It is organised by Malawi Golf Union (MGU) and invites Tanzania golfers including professionals, amateurs and juniors to participate in the event that also brings together top players from all parts of the continent.
Tanzania Professional Golfers Association (TPGA) chairman John Bosco told the ‘Daily News’ over the weekend that they have received the invitation with thanks.
Bosco added that the financial constraints have prevented the domestic pros from confirming their participation.
“No pros confirmed participation at Malawi Open. We have acknowledged them about the invitation; it is worth it for our golfers to test their skills against Africa’s top players.
“But the big issue is the availability of sponsorship, players are in good shape and ready to go to Malawi to compete and it is also an ideal platform for harmonizing friendship with our neighbouring countries, only good support can do,” he added.
Bosco said Tanzania pros need support from sponsors to be able to compete outside the country and also organise local tournaments.
He urges companies, institutions and sports well-wishers to assist them so as to develop, promote and use the game to promote the country’s tourism.
According to organisers the Malawi Open will also see juniors compete in the 18 holes medal format on day one, Ladies will also battle in a day-stroke play format and men’s amateur championship will also compete in a three-day 54-hole event.
The men’s Division A and B players will compete in 36-hole showdown.
