Makonda calls on Ukerewe residents to reap gains from the Island’s fisheries resources, livestock, and tourism

NANSIO: THE Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Paul Makonda, has urged the residents of Ukerewe District to shift their mindset and leverage existing opportunities in the tourism, fisheries, livestock, and commercial agriculture sectors.

This, he noted, would boost their local economy and transform the district into a tourism hub within the Lake Zone.

Makonda made these remarks today during a working visit to Ukerewe District held at the Gertrude Mongella grounds where he was representing the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan.

He said that Ukerewe possesses significant economic potential, owing to its island geography, fisheries resources, livestock, and various tourist attractions. He encouraged the local population to harness these opportunities to drive their own development, rather than relying solely on external investors.

He expressed his vision for Ukerewe to become a destination rich in tourist attractions, hotels, and diverse economic activities much like other established tourism hubs. He emphasized that development begins with the residents themselves, urging them to have faith in their own capabilities and to initiate income-generating activities.
