Majengo stadium set for 1bn/- facelift

KILIMANJARO: THE Moshi Municipal Council (MMC) is set to embark on an extensive 1bn/- project aimed at facelifting the renowned Majengo Stadium.

This investment is part of the council’s initiative to fully capitalise on the country’s role as a co-host of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals. MMC Municipal Director Mwajuma Nasombe recently shared insights into the project, underscoring that the new funds add to the already allocated 600m/- spent on the stadium’s initial construction.

“The existence of this stadium has been pivotal in fostering sports, particularly football, within Moshi Municipality and the greater Kilimanjaro region,” Nasombe noted.

Highlighting the potential benefits of the renovation, Mwajuma stated, “We aim to seize this unique opportunity, allowing teams participating in the AFCON finals to use Majengo Stadium for their training sessions.”

She added that the investment will increase the financial inflow to the council.

Mwajuma extended a call to action to local traders and residents of the Kilimanjaro region, urging them to support the stadium improvements.

“This is a chance for businesses to thrive, leveraging the event’s popularity to market their products and services. Football has a massive global appeal, attracting significant audiences,” she remarked, underscoring the dual opportunity for both sports and local commerce.

In a complementary statement, MMC Lordship Mayor Zuberi Kidumo revealed that the renovation funds will be drawn from the council’s projected revenue collections of 10bn/- for the 2025/26 financial year.

He highlighted the areas that the funding will impact, including improvements to the playing area, upgrades to the venue’s infrastructure, and the installation of spectator seating and floodlights.

“The enhancements will include the installation of spectator seating, stadium lighting, improvements to the playing area and upgraded infrastructure for crowd management,” Kidumo elaborated.
