The well-attended event, held at the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi offices in Kisiwandui, Zanzibar, was accompanied by a special prayer for the deceased.

It’s exactly 51 years since the passing on the First Isle’s President who led from 1964 to 1972, when he was assassinated.

The late President Karume is remembered for his leadership and interest in uniting the Zanzibaris. He and Mwalimu Julius Nyerere from the mainland championed the existing Union.

Karume Day is observed every April 7 to commemorate the death of Abeid Amani Karume, a former President of Zanzibar and Vice President of Tanzania.
