Madina stamps authority in 2023 Dar Open

ARUSHA Gymkhana Club (AGC) golfer, Madina Iddi wheezed past tough opponents to superbly win the Dar es Salaam Ladies Golf Open title by a stroke in a thrilling showdown.

Backed by Jubilee Allianz, the 36-holed tournament saw Madina leading by three strokes going into Sunday’s final round but was pressed by her club-mate Neema Olomi, who shot a 74 and closed to within a shot in the final round.

The country’s lady golf heroine, Madina who arrived in Dar on Friday mid-night and went straight to the Saturday morning opening round’s tee-off without practicing the course, again held off stiff challenge to win her third major title this year.

The event that ended at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club (DGC) over the weekend saw Madina winning with an impressive 150 aggregate score, with 74 strokes in the first day 180 holes.

After being crowned the championship, joyful Madina said: ” I thank God for the win, it was not that easy as you can see it was a very close competition.

“I had to endure tough challenges from players in my group (Neema Olomi and Hawa Wanyeche) from Day one, they are really good players.”

Madina added that the event was very nice and well organised and she thanked sponsors, DGC and TLGU for organising a good event.

She set sights on adding another trophy to her cabinet after putting the country into the spotlight when crowned the 2023 Kenya Amateur Ladies Golf Open Champions by two strokes in Kenya and Ghana Ladies Open last month.

Her next mission was in Ghana where she won her WAGR (World Amateur Golf Ranking) women’s points which was Madina’s dream.

Speaking during the prize-giving ceremony, TLGU President, Queen Siraki complimented all sponsors and clubs for making the tournament a huge success.

“Golf sport is growing and we want to grow with you (sponsors), 2023 has been a very good year for the ladies, we have other biggest to come,” she stressed.
