Lugalo Junior Golf fundraising event May 11

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Juniors Development Committee at the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces (TPDF) Lugalo Golf Club of Dar es Salaam, has set the new date for the Juniors Fundraising tournament.

The 18-hole tournament will take the par 72 Lugalo course by storm on May 11 this year. Joseph Tango, one of the tournament conveners unveiled the new date in Dar es Salaam yesterday.

Tango said: “Fellow golfers the new date for the juniors golf tournament and fundraising will be on Saturday 11th May 2024.” The event was scheduled early during the 60th Union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar celebration on April 26 this year.

However, the heavy rainfall in Dar es Salaam has prevented the golfing fraternity from memorably celebrating the Union Dar after the last-minute postponement. Over 67 golfers have already registered so far to support club juniors’ development.

However, organisers have appealed to the companies, institutions and sports well-wishers to come forward and support the Lugalo juniors in one way or another.

Tango said the event is open for men and ladies’ golfers as prizes wait for the winners in different categories as well. Lugalo is among the few clubs doing well in terms of junior development programmes in Tanzania.

Lugalo Juniors Development Committee chairman Kain Mbaya was quoted recently as saying that the Committee’s main objective is nurturing and developing the game of golf amongst club Juniors.

He said the biggest challenge that the committee has faced is the lack of funds to support in terms of equipment. “The opportunity is huge but all these good things require committed leadership and cost money for Lugalo that’s why we are having the fundraising so that we can be better.

“It’s a starting point for us to have a Juniors fund at the Club. If all clubs follow our lead and Tanzania Golf Union (TGU) has a proper Juniors Development Plan/ Foundation that is bankable then sponsors will also come in,” he added.

Maryanne Mugo also organising team members appeals for golfers who have used but still in good condition golf bags, clubs, putters as well as any golf attires to feel free to donate to the Juniors.
