Local innovators receive 250m/- award in energy challenge

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Ministry of Energy, in collaboration with the European Union (EU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), has awarded a total of 250m/- to ten local innovators as part of ongoing efforts to promote clean and efficient energy solutions in Tanzania.

The funding was disbursed under the Energy Efficiency Innovation Challenge, whose second edition was held last Friday in Dar es Salaam.

Speaking during the event, the Commissioner for Electricity and Renewable Energy, Engineer Innocent Luoga, who represented the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Energy, said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to a clean energy future driven by local innovation.

“Energy efficiency is not only about reducing consumption; it is a tool for innovation, job creation and sustainable industrialisation. Through this Challenge, we are empowering Tanzanians, especially youth and women, to shape the country’s energy future,” Mr Luoga said.

He further urged development partners to implement energy efficiency projects at Mtumba, the government city, where such practices are in high demand. Launched in 2024, the Challenge is part of the implementation of Tanzania’s Energy Efficiency Action Plan (2022–2025) and aligns with the newly adopted National Energy Efficiency Strategy (2024– 2034).

The European Union’s Head of Natural Resources, Mr Lamine Diallo, reiterated the EU’s commitment to supporting Tanzania’s energy transformation.

“The European Union is proud to support Tanzania’s journey towards clean energy for all. These innovators embody the creativity and dedication needed to make energy efficiency a reality in homes, businesses and communities,” he said, adding that the initiative supports global climate goals and Tanzania’s Vision 2050.

The supported pilot projects focus on areas such as energy-efficient appliances, green building practices and behavioural change models that promote responsible energy consumption. UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, Mr John Rutere, said the investment in local innovators will help build inclusive development.

“Energy efficiency is a cornerstone of Tanzania’s just energy transition. By supporting local talent, we are not only reducing emissions and creating green jobs but also ensuring energy access remains affordable and inclusive,” Mr Rutere said.

The Innovation Challenge is a flagship initiative under the Energy Efficiency Action Plan Project, implemented by the Ministry of Energy.

“This year, the Challenge attracted 95 applicants from across the country, with ten successful innovators selected to receive up to 25m/- each in seed funding and technical mentorship,” he said.

This edition highlighted the vital role of youth leadership, public-private partnerships and community-led innovation in accelerating Tanzania’s sustainable energy agenda.
