Lightning kills villager on spot

RUKWA: A resident of Muze village along Rift Valley at Lake Rukwa Basin in Sumbawanga District, Rukwa Region, Mr Edward Silungu (32) has died on the spot after being hit by lightning, following heavy rains.

Mr Silungu was struck by lightning to death while he was taking refuge under the tree with his father Ibrahim Silungu (75) who cheated death.

Sumbawanga District Commissioner (DC) Mr Nyakia Chirukie confirmed the incident saying it occurred on Monday morning at Muze village.

He called upon citizens in the precinct to take necessary precautions during this rainy season and should not be taking refuge under the trees.

In another incident, the DC confirmed that 27 cattle have died on the spot after being struck by lightning on Monday morning.

Mr Chirukie said the incidents occurred separately in Sumbawanga municipality and Sumbawanga District Council.

He went ahead to say that the first incident occurred at Tamasenga village at Pito ward in municipality where 25 cattle died on spot after being hit by lightning.

“About 78 cattle were kept in the same place, the lightning struck 25 cattle to death while two cattle sustained injuries and the remaining 53 cattle were left unharmed. All cattle are property of one herder,” stated the DC.

He added that two cattle were killed instantly after being struck by lightning at Muze ward along the Lake Rukwa Basin in Sumbawanga District.
