DAR ES SALAAM: FORMER Taifa Stars players have shared experiences and advice on what should be done to prepare for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 finals.
In exclusive interviews with the ‘Daily News’ on Wednesday in Dar es Salaam, the legends commended the team’s commitment and unity during their qualifying match against Guinea.
The veterans collectively emphasised leadership, preparation and experience as critical factors for success at AFCON 2025. Former player and coach, Abdallah Kibadeni, famously known as ‘King Kibadeni’, praised leadership at all levels, including the government for significant contributions to football.
He highlighted President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s support, which included a 5m/- reward for every goal scored and free stadium entry for fans during the Tuesday match.
“My interpretation of yesterday’s victory is that the players are well-cared for. President Samia’s motivation is bearing fruits. I have never seen a president offering 5m/- per goal and allowing free entry for fans,” Kibadeni said.
He urged current players to see football as a career path and take pride in representing the nation.

“Football is a job. Our players must understand their responsibility to bring pride to the nation. In our time, playing for the national team was a great honour,” he said.
Kibadeni also recounted the morale-boosting visits from senior government and party leaders during his era, such as the late Moses Nnauye, who would encourage players in camp. He emphasised the need for teamwork and having experienced coaches and officials to guide the team.
Kibadeni also praised the presence of local coaches; Hemed Suleiman ‘Morocco’ and Juma Mgunda on the technical bench, calling them patriotic and skilled leaders.
“Having local coaches like Mgunda and Julio under Hemed Suleiman is a winning combination. Seeing them work together with football officials who understand the game gave me confidence,” Kibadeni noted.
Another legend, Dua Said, expressed pride in the team’s recent success, acknowledging the importance of fans and leadership in securing victory. “As a Tanzanian, being at the stadium after the win made me feel like I had contributed, even though I am neither a coach nor an official,” Said remarked.
He suggested minor squad adjustments, recommending Yusuph Kagoma to strengthen the full-back position currently held by Novatus Dismas, citing disciplinary concerns.
He also stressed the importance of experienced players like Mbwana Samatta and Simon Msuva who are already in the squad, saying their presence inspires the team and intimidates opponents.
“Veteran players are crucial. Players like Samatta, who has played in Europe, bring a wealth of experience. Just as we feared Guinea’s Dortmund player, they feared our Samatta,” Said explained.
Boniface Pawasa, now a National Beach Soccer Team Coach, applauded the team’s tactical discipline and suggested offering additional rewards to the players.
“They displayed high concentration and discipline. I believe they deserve more rewards for their dedication,” Pawasa said.
He also called for more international-friendly matches to prepare the team for AFCON and CHAN competitions, urging investment in young talent to ensure a sustainable pipeline of skilled players.
Veteran Adolf Rishard reflected on his time with Taifa Stars, comparing the current scientific preparations to the simpler methods of the past.
“Back then, we were not as scientific in our approach. I remember eating pilau three times a day during Lushoto camp,” Rishard recalled with humour. He underscored the importance of unity and patriotism in playing for the national team. “In our era, playing for the national team was a symbol of patriotism and club loyalties did not interfere,” he said.
In another development Tanzania Sports Writers Association (TASWA) has commended the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF), Interim Taifa Stars Head Coach Suleiman, his assistants and the national team players for securing qualification for AFCON finals.
The praise was conveyed in a press release signed by TASWA Deputy Secretary-General, Iman Makongoro.
TASWA also applauded the fans who filled the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, offering unwavering support to Taifa Stars and boosting the team’s morale.
“We urge all Tanzanians to continue supporting Taifa Stars, as the journey ahead remains challenging and demanding. The unity displayed to achieve this milestone must now be intensified to ensure success in Morocco,” the statement read.
Furthermore, TASWA emphasised the importance of starting preparations for the tournament promptly and called on various stakeholders to contribute resources and support necessary for the team to excel in the AFCON competition.
“Preparations for next year’s finals should commence immediately and we urge everyone capable to come forward and assist Taifa Stars, as their victory elevates the nation’s honour,” the statement added.
