Legends applaud Stars commanding CHAN opener victory

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA’S football icons have lauded Taifa Stars’ emphatic 2-0 victory over Burkina Faso in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) opener, hailing it as a statement of intent and a testament to tireless effort and exceptional team chemistry.

In an exclusive interview with the ‘Daily News’, former Taifa Stars goalkeeper, Steven Nemes, ex-Simba and Young Africans’ defender Aboubakar Kombo and former Stars, Simba and Yanga forward, Zamoyoni Mogella, praised the team’s performance, attributing the win to a renewed sense of purpose, unity and strategic brilliance.

Nemes was particularly struck by the collective determination shown on the pitch: “In that game, the players worked extremely hard. They played as one unit, showed clear understanding and demonstrated unity. That’s exactly why we secured the win,” said the veteran goalkeeper.

He was quick to highlight the crucial role played by the coaching bench, led by Head Coach Hemed Suleiman, alongside assistants Jamhuri Kihwelo ‘Julio’ and Juma Mgunda.

“These coaches know the game inside out. They’ve all played at high levels and have deep roots in Tanzanian football. Their impact on the players is evident,” he added.

Nemes expressed full confidence in the coaching staff’s technical prowess and tactical wisdom, emphasising that trust and discipline from the players would be the key to progressing far in the tournament.

“As long as the players listen and implement the game plan, I don’t see anything standing in their way.”

He also praised the squad’s fighting spirit, something he believes had been missing in previous Taifa Stars outfits.

“What we lacked before was that fire. But now, the players are showing grit and determination. Clement Mzize and Abdul Suleiman ‘Sopu’ are great examples, relentless in midfield and always pressing.”

Despite some missed chances in front of goal, Nemes downplayed concerns about the attacking line, noting the importance of Suleiman’s tactical approach.

“The coach tailors’ tactics to each opponent. Against Burkina Faso, it was all about pressing as a unit. That’s modern football—everyone defends, everyone attacks. It confuses opponents and gives you an edge.” He also offered advice for the team’s current goalkeeper.

“A goalkeeper is the commander on the pitch. He sees everything and must constantly talk to his defenders. With his physique, he should be more vocal. A team with a commanding keeper has an 80 per cent chance of winning,” he said. Mogella echoed the praise but urged caution moving forward.

“Yes, we played well and took advantage of home support. But we must remain grounded. Every game will bring a different challenge.” He noted that the evolving nature of football demands adaptability.

“The game isn’t just about talent anymore. It’s scientific. Without tactical awareness and teamwork, talent alone won’t get you far.” As for Kombo, he pointed to the midfield as the heartbeat of the victory.

“Coach Suleiman utilised Yusuph Kagoma perfectly, which allowed players like Feisal Salum, Idd Nado and Sopu to roam and create chances. That flexibility made all the difference.”

He was also thrilled by the full-backs’ contributions. “Seeing Shomari Kapombe and Mohamed Hussein pushing forward with overlapping runs reminded me of my days on the field. That’s what modern football requires—fullbacks who can adapt fluidly to attack and defend.”

All three legends agree: The CHAN opener was a powerful springboard for the Taifa Stars. Now, the focus must shift to consistency, adaptability and maintaining the momentum.

“It’s a great start but the real test begins now,” said Mogella.

“Burkina Faso return to action against Central African Republic, while Mauritania face Tanzania in what could prove pivotal in determining quarter-final hopefuls. The win lifts Tanzania to the top of Group B with three points — a perfect start to their campaign. Burkina Faso, meanwhile, sit bottom and must respond quickly to keep their quarter-final hopes alive.
