Lawmakers raise concerns over improper disposable diaper waste
ZANZIBAR: The Minister of State in the Office of the First Vice President (Environment, HIV/AIDS, and People with Disabilities), Ms Harusi Said Suleiman, has called for increased public awareness to discourage the improper disposal of used diapers.
“We have embarked on educating people about littering, including the irresponsible discarding of used diapers for both children and adults.
Let us all be involved in educating the community on keeping our surroundings and streets clean to prevent diseases,” Ms Harusi emphasised.
Her statement was in response to questions from backbenchers in the House of Representatives regarding the health risks posed by improper disposal of diaper waste and the measures being taken to address the issue.

Ms Harusi noted that while no specific research has directly linked improper diaper disposal to health problems, some studies suggest that poor management of disposable diaper waste is emerging as a global health concern.
Potential risks include contamination of drinking water and exposure to chemical and physical contaminants that may harm humans, animals, and the environment.
