Religious leaders earn kudos for role to battle drug abuse

ZANZIBAR: MINISTER of State in the Office of the First Vice-President (HIV/AIDS, Illicit Drugs, Environment, and People with Disabilities), Ms Harusi Said Suleiman, has commended religious leaders in Zanzibar for their efforts in discouraging illicit drug use, particularly among youth.

In response to a question from Ameir Abdallah Ameir (Mwanakwerekwe constituency) about the impact of religion on substance abuse, Ms Harusi highlighted the significant role religious leaders play.

“Religion is a vital protective factor against substance abuse and provides essential support for individuals in recovery. Many people listen to their leaders, which makes their influence invaluable,” she said during a recent question and answer session in the House.

She emphasized that addressing the issue of illicit drugs requires a comprehensive understanding of its social, economic, spiritual, and health dimensions.

This multifaceted problem calls for the collective efforts of the entire community to reduce or eliminate drug use.
