LATRA targets 2,000 for transport week

DAR ES SALAAM: More than 2,000 participants are expected to attend the second Sustainable Land Transport Week in Dar es Salaam from November 24 to 26, as the government steps up efforts to promote safer, greener and more inclusive transport services.

The event, to be held at Mlimani City, will bring together transport stakeholders for exhibitions, discussions and the second edition of awards recognising outstanding service providers in the sector.

Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA) Director General Dr Habibu Suluo said the awards are aimed at promoting healthy competition among transport operators and encouraging improvements in service quality, safety and efficiency.

Speaking to journalists on October 23, 2026, he said the awards would also strengthen public confidence in transport providers while motivating operators to embrace innovation, technology and environmentally friendly practices.

The awards will cover several categories, including long-distance passenger buses, freight transport, drivers and bus attendants, ride-hailing services, car-hire operators and railway transport services.

The assessment will consider safety, reliability, customer care, fleet management, innovation, compliance with regulations and environmental conservation.

Dr Suluo said the selection process would involve key stakeholders, including the Police Traffic Division, LATRA Consumer Consultative Council and members of the public.

Tanzania held its inaugural Sustainable Land Transport Week in Dar es Salaam in November 2025, following the United Nations General Assembly’s declaration of November 26 as World Sustainable Transport Day in 2023.
