Late fire alerts cost Zanzibar over 4bn/- in 2025

ZANZIBAR: THE Zanzibar Fire and Rescue Brigade has reported losses exceeding 4bn/- in 2025, largely due to delays by residents in reporting fire incidents, officials have said.

Speaking to journalists at the brigade’s headquarters at Kilimani, Assistant Commissioner Haji Pandu said delayed alerts have become a major obstacle in efforts to save lives and property.

“The losses are significant and are mainly caused by victims reporting fire incidents too late, which delays our response and limits our ability to carry out effective rescue operations,” Pandu said.

He explained that in many cases, fires have already spread extensively by the time firefighters arrive at the scene, resulting in greater property damage and, at times, putting lives at serious risk.

Despite the challenge, Mr Pandu said the brigade continues to perform its duties effectively, responding to emergencies and conducting fire safety awareness campaigns in both urban and rural communities.

He said the education programmes aim to raise public awareness on fire prevention and the importance of reporting incidents promptly to minimise avoidable damage. He added that through timely interventions, the brigade has managed to save property worth 15.4bn/-, including assets in major hotels, commercial buildings and other economically important facilities.

Mr Pandu attributed the success to strong cooperation among stakeholders and the dedication of fire officers, urging the public to continue working closely with the brigade by reporting fire incidents early. He also called on residents to take precautions when using electricity, gas and fire-prone equipment, stressing that prevention is better than cure.
