Lalji Foundation: Changing how kids sit, study in Kasulu

Sometimes, the simplest things make the biggest difference. Take desks, for example.

They may seem like ordinary furniture, but to a student in Kasulu district, a desk is not just a place to put your books, it is a throne of learning, a command center of creativity, and a barrier against the chaos of overcrowded classrooms.

Recognizing this, the Lalji Foundation, a powerhouse non-governmental organization (NGO) known for its unwavering commitment to community development, has stepped up in a big way and this round again by donating 100 desks to three primary schools in Kasulu: Chekenya, Katoto, and Nyakasanda.

This generous donation comes as part of an ongoing effort to back the Tanzanian government’s push to improve the learning environment nationwide. Because let us face it, you can have the brightest teachers and best curriculum, but if the kids don’t have a decent place to sit, those lessons might just fly out the window or off the cramped benches!

The desks found their new homes at a lively handover ceremony held at Chekenya Primary School in Kurugongo ward. Kasulu District Commissioner, Colonel Isaac Mwakisu, was on hand to express his appreciation, noting that these desks are more than just pieces of wood and metal and precisely they represent better learning conditions, fewer students skipping classes, and ultimately, improved academic results.

Col. Mwakisu made it clear that this donation exemplifies the positive collaboration between the government and development partners. “We can’t do it all ourselves at once,” he said, with a hint of humor. “That is why we value partnerships with organizations like Lalji Foundation, who help us get the job done faster and better. After all, teamwork makes the dream work!”

He also reminded students of their part in this partnership: “Now that you have these desks, it is up to you to make the most of them. Study hard, aim high, and become the leaders this country needs.” Wise words because desks might be magical, but they won’t do the homework for you!

Sheni Lalji’s Vision: More than just furniture

The patron of the foundation, Mohsin Sheni Lalji, highlighted the broader goal behind the desks. It’s not just about providing furniture; it’s about creating an environment where respect, organization, and effective teaching can thrive. The donation is intended to improve classroom management, enhance teacher efficiency, reduce absenteeism (no more excuses about uncomfortable seating!), and bolster the government’s efforts to improve education infrastructure.

In other words, these desks are part of a bigger picture: empowering students and teachers alike to build a stronger future.

The practical benefits were made clear by Benjamini Mwapule, head teacher of Chekenya Primary School. With just 25 of the 100 desks delivered to his school, over 100 students can now sit comfortably and a far cry from the previous scramble for space and the awkward crouches over tiny benches. He expressed heartfelt thanks to the Lalji Foundation for stepping up when it mattered most.

Lalji Foundation’s ongoing commitment

The Lalji Foundation was established by the visionary Lalji family with a mission that goes far beyond desks. Their core philosophy is about fostering self-sufficiency and enhancing the quality of life for vulnerable communities across Tanzania. The foundation’s work spans multiple sectors, all interlinked with the goal of empowering individuals and communities.

Here are some of their key focus areas:

Education Empowerment: Beyond desks, the foundation provides scholarships, learning materials, and even supports school infrastructure projects helping those who need it most to access quality education.

Health Initiatives: Recognizing that healthy children learn better, the foundation organizes medical camps and health awareness programs, ensuring communities are physically and mentally well.

Financial Assistance: They provide financial literacy training and microloans to marginalized communities, helping people build stable livelihoods.

Community Development: Infrastructure improvements in transportation, utilities, and public facilities are supported to create a holistic environment where communities can thrive.

Supporting Orphans: The foundation actively supports orphanages and vulnerable children, offering them education and essential care.

Skills Development: From vocational training to professional growth programs, they equip individuals with tools needed for self-reliance.

More impactful projects: Not just about desks

Lalji Foundation’s generosity doesn’t stop with desks. Some of their standout initiatives include: Free Eye Camps in Karagwe: Over 1,600 individuals received free eye screenings, surgeries, and glasses, improving vision and quality of life; Mnazi Mmoja Health Camp: A multi-day event providing cancer screenings, blood donations, mental health education, and general health care to thousands in Dar es Salaam and School Supplies for Orphans: Donated uniforms and educational materials to hundreds of orphans, supporting their education and well-being.

These projects underscore the foundation’s holistic approach to community support, working hand-in-hand with government efforts to uplift Tanzania’s most vulnerable populations.

At first glance, donating 100 desks might seem like a small gesture, but in Kasulu, it’s a game-changer. For students who struggled to find a place to study, these desks offer dignity, comfort, and the promise of a brighter future.

Thanks to the Lalji Foundation and partners like the Tanzanian government, more children can sit down, focus, and dream bigger than ever before. Because when you give a child a desk, you’re not just giving them a seat—you’re giving them a foundation.
