Ladies First Athletics Competition kicks off today

DAR ES SALAAM: THE sixth season of the Women’s Athletics Competition (Ladies First) will kick off today at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam, with over 150 athletes from 31 regions across Tanzania participating.

The event focuses on developing young female talent; under the age of 20, with the goal of preparing them for future national and international representation.

Neema Msitha, the Executive Secretary of the National Sports Council (NSC) shared that the competition will run from today through November 24, and there will also be a seminar on women’s issues and coaching workshops for participants and officials.

The opening ceremony, which will be attended by the Minister for Culture, Arts and Sports, Damas Ndumbaro, will also include fitness exercises and slow jog races involving 500 amateur participants from Temeke District.

“This year’s event introduces new criteria, focusing on girls under 20, with the primary aim of nurturing young talent for future national representation,” said Msitha.

The competitions will include races in 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 5000m, 10,000m, the 4x100m relay, and javelin throwing. Retired Colonel Juma Ikangaa, an Olympic representative and Founder of Ladies First stressed the importance of sports in promoting gender equality and improving health.

He explained that female participation in athletics helps break down societal barriers that often restrict women and girls from engaging in competitive activities.

“Through initiatives like Ladies First, we are not just developing athletes but empowering future leaders who will inspire their communities,” Ikangaa said.

“Sports improve health and reduce the risks associated with sedentary lifestyles and chronic diseases.” He urged parents to support their daughters’ ambitions in sports, noting that such encouragement is key to fostering an environment where women feel confident and accepted in these spaces.

“I believe this initiative will create opportunities for more Tanzanian athletes to shine on the international stage, including at the Olympic Games. Through such programmes, we are building a strong foundation for the next generation of champions,” he concluded.
