Kudos Arajiga et al for CHAN selection

YESTERDAY it was reported that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled the list of 29 referees set to officiate at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), with Tanzania proudly represented by centre referee Ahmed Arajiga, alongside assistant referees Komba John Frank and Ally Hamdani Said.

Arajiga’s inclusion headlines a modest refereeing presence from CHAN’s East African co-hosts.

Only seven referees three from Tanzania and two from each country Kenya and Uganda. While the numbers may not be overwhelming, the selection of Arajiga to officiate at such a prestigious tournament is a nod to Tanzania’s growing credibility in African officiating circles.

His appointment puts him at the centre of a continental stage that blends football brilliance with tactical discipline. It is undoubtedly a great honour for Tanzania, football authorities and specifically the appointed referees to officiate in this CHAN edition.

It is our hope that they will be fair and elevate the country’s profile in football officiating. Officiating in football is crucial for ensuring fair play, maintaining order and upholding the integrity of the game.

Referees, as the primary on-field officials, are responsible for interpreting and enforcing the rules, managing player conduct and ensuring the safety of everyone involved. Their decisions, though sometimes controversial, are essential for a structured and enjoyable game.

Why is officiating important? Here are some reasons. The first is enforcing the rules: Referees ensure the game is played according to the Laws of the Game, making sure players and coaches adhere to the rules and regulations. Maintaining order and safety is another reason.

They manage player behaviour, address fouls and misconduct and take action to ensure the safety of players, coaches and even spectators. Fair play and integrity: By applying the rules consistently and impartially, referees promote fair play and protect the integrity of the competition.

Final decision-making authority: The referee is the ultimate authority on the field, making crucial decisions about goals, penalties, fouls and other game-related incidents.

Facilitating the game: Referees help to keep the game flowing smoothly, making timely decisions and using advantage calls when appropriate to avoid unnecessary stoppages.
