Kenyan firm ordered to pay over 900m/- to NSSF

DAR ES SALAAM: THE High Court in Dar es Salaam has ordered Central Electricals International Limited, a Kenyan family-owned company, to pay more than 900m/- to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF) for unremitted employee contributions and penalties.
In a ruling delivered by Judge Anold Kirekiano, the court granted a summary judgment in favour of the Board of Trustees of the NSSF and the Attorney General, who jointly filed the suit against the company.
“The defendant, Central Electricals International Limited, is hereby ordered to pay a total of 938,375,146.21/-, being unremitted members’ contributions and accumulated penalties due and payable to the NSSF,” Judge Kirekiano said.
The total amount comprises 783,072,018.13/- in unpaid contributions and 155,303,128.08 in penalties, covering the period from January 2019 to June 2024. Court documents show that the NSSF had issued multiple formal demands to the company, urging it to meet its statutory obligations.

However, the firm failed to comply, prompting the NSSF and the Attorney General to seek legal redress. The company was initially granted leave to defend the suit, provided it deposited 231,266,937/- with the court within 21 days. However, it failed to meet this condition.
“This court, on August 15, 2025, found that no deposit had been made. As provided under the Civil Procedure Code, where a summary suit is not defended, the allegations in the plaint are deemed admitted,” Judge Kirekiano noted.
Although headquartered in Kenya, Central Electricals International Limited is incorporated under Tanzanian law and registered with the NSSF as a contributing employer.
