DODOMA: THE Julius Nyerere Hydro Power Project (JNHPP) has reached 99.82 percent completion, generating 1,880 megawatts for the national electricity grid as of March 2025.
The total expenditure on the project so far amounts to 6.558 trillion, with 95.90 percent of this cost already paid to the contractor—a joint venture between Elsewedy Electric and Arab Contractors from Egypt.
The Managing Director of the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO), Engineer Gissima Nyamo-Hanga, provided this update in Dodoma on March 26, 2025, while presenting a report on the achievements and direction of the company during the four years of the Sixth Phase Government.

He stated that the project has significantly increased electricity production capacity in the national grid and is expected to be fully completed by May 2025. By then, all nine turbines will be operational, generating a total of 2,115 megawatts.
Additionally, the transmission line project from JNHPP to Chalinze, with a voltage of 400 kilovolts and a length of 160 km, has reached 99.75 percent completion. The construction of the Chalinze power substation has achieved 97.59 percent completion. This project has enhanced electricity transmission infrastructure and improved power capacity in the national grid.
JNHPP stands as one of the major achievements of the Sixth Phase Government under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, contributing to increased electricity accessibility and improving the livelihoods of Tanzanian residents.
