JKT Queens to learn CAF CL opponents today

THE country’s envoys JKT Queens will know their 2023 CAF Women’s Champions League group opponents today when the official draw takes place in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.

The draw will be conducted at 1 pm (East African Time) and be livestreamed on CAF digital platforms.

The third edition of this prestigious African women’s club competition is set to take place in the Ivory Coast next month from the 5th to 19th.

The eight teams that qualified for the finals are JKT Queens – Tanzania (CECAFA), AS FAR – Morocco (Defending champions), Athletico Abidjan – Ivory Coast and SC Casablanca – Morocco (UNAF).

AS Mande – Mali (WAFU A), Ampem Darkoa – Ghana (WAFU B), Mamelodi Sundowns – South Africa (COSAFA, 2021 champions) and Huracanes – Equatorial Guinea (UNIFFAC).

It is another milestone that for the second consecutive year Tanzania’s team features after Simba Queens took part in the second edition held in Morocco last year.

JKT Queens won the ticket to play in the continental showdown after winning the Tanzania Women’s Premier League title with the best record of not suffering defeat following a stellar performance in all their engagements, as well as regional tournament.

At the 2023 CECAFA competition held in Uganda, JKT Queens outclassed CBE of Ethiopia 5-4 on post-match penalties in the final to win the trophy.

This is the first time that CAFs elite club competition is hosted in West Africa.

Morocco’s ASFAR are the current champions of the CAF Women’s Champions League after they defeated Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa in Rabat last year.

Mamelodi Sundowns won the inaugural competition in Egypt in 2021 and both clubs have qualified for the final tournament.
