JKCI’s sports unit impresses Fountain Gate students

DAR ES SALAAM: JAKAYA Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) and Fountain Gate Academy have signed a cooperation agreement today, June 16, 2025, that enables sportsmen and women from the academy to undergo health tests before participating in sports.

The move comes a few days after JKCI signed a similar cooperation agreement with the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) to test players for health before practicing or playing.

Speaking today in Dar es Salaam during the signing of the agreement on behalf of the JKCI Executive Director, Dr Angella Muhozya, said the aim is to create healthy sportsmen and women from the academy.

“We highly commend Fountain Gate Academy for recognizing this. They have 14 schools and they all do sports, they care about sportsmen, women congratulations.

She said the Sports Cardiology program is a new JKCI program and they have established it to protect sportsmen/women by testing their health, and the unit specializes in helping people who do sports have health that can help them do sports,” she said.

Dr. Muhozya said they aim to prevent the young sportsmen and women from heart-related complications by providing tips and education on health issues in sports.

“You are important stakeholders and you motivate students to love sports,” she emphasized.

On the part of Fountain Gate, the academy’s director, Japhet Makau, said their goal is for children to be healthy and love sports.

“In addition to education, we are focused on sports. There is a program for under-fives to learn and become excellent sportsmen and women in the future. We have an under-seven team and under-17s. We have a team that includes the majority of Tanzanian girls and is doing well. We have the Fountain Gate team that plays in the Premier League,” he said.

He said they have more than 10,000 youth in their institution who are focused on sports and for all the years, they have not had a health screening system, even though they have not had a pandemic.

“JKCI has come at the right time. There are many youth who want to develop themselves in sports. We want them to test their health in our 14 schools. I believe all youth will have the opportunity to have a heart screening. We have rushed to do it after seeing how important this is.”

He added, “Before he gets involved in sports, let’s first know his health and even do exercises that are not compatible with health. We assure parents that children who play will have health that allows them to later become doctors. We want students to be trained to later become doctors who will help in this area.
