Japan assures Tanzania of its commitment to strengthen ties in critical infrastructure   

TOKYO, JAPAN: THE government of Japan has assured Tanzania of its continued commitment to strengthening development cooperation between the two countries, particularly in fostering economic growth and improving critical infrastructure.

The pledge was made by Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeri during a meeting with Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa held today, May 29, 2025, in Tokyo, Japan. During the discussions, Prime Minister Shigeri reaffirmed Japan’s intention to further enhance its partnership with Tanzania through investment and ongoing development projects, particularly those implemented in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

In response, Prime Minister Majaliwa expressed his gratitude for the continued cooperation and called for its expansion. He also took the opportunity to request Japan, through JICA, to support Tanzania in conducting major repairs on the Morogoro–Dodoma and Kibiti–Lindi roads, which have been severely damaged due to heavy rainfall currently affecting parts of the country.

Following the request, Prime Minister Shigeri directed JICA officials and the Japanese Ambassador to Tanzania, Youichi Mikami, to visit the affected roads, assess the extent of the damage, and submit a report to the Japanese government for consideration on how best to collaborate on the repairs.

Prime Minister Shigeri also commended the growing and strong relationship between Tanzania and Japan, emphasizing that his government will continue to encourage Japanese companies to engage with Tanzania in economic, social, and technological sectors. He noted that Japan recognizes Tanzania’s rapidly growing population and the importance of supporting the country’s development efforts.
