JAB warns unaccredited journalists, initiates crackdown
DAR ES SALAAM: THE Journalists Accreditation Board (JAB) has issued a stern warning to individuals engaging in journalistic activities without official accreditation, ordering them to stop immediately or face legal action.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the board said practicing journalism without accreditation is an offence under Section 50 of the Media Services Act, Chapter 229. It added that it will soon conduct a special nationwide inspection of media houses to ensure that all individuals performing journalistic duties meet the legal requirements.
The board warned that it will not hesitate to take legal action against any individual or institution found employing or permitting unaccredited persons to carry out journalistic work in violation of the law. According to the statement, JAB has recently discovered that some unqualified individuals have resumed journalistic activities following the conclusion of the General Election.
The Board stressed that journalism is a professional discipline governed by law, ethics and professional standards. It reminded the public that anyone engaging in journalistic work without accreditation violates Section 19 of the Media Services Act, Chapter 229 (2023 Edition).

Under Regulation 17(1) (a) of the Media Services Act Regulations, Government Notice No. 18 of February 3, 2017, those required to obtain accreditation include editors, journalists, freelance writers, photographers, programme producers, and radio and television broadcasters working in media institutions.
JAB further clarified that accreditation is not a restriction on press freedom but rather an important tool to protect the dignity and integrity of the journalism profession, enhance public trust in information, and provide legal protection to journalists while carrying out their duties.
The Board has urged all aspiring journalists to ensure they obtain proper accreditation in accordance with the law, uphold professional ethics and use their platforms responsibly to serve the public by providing accurate information, promoting accountability and contributing to the country’s sustainable development.
