JAB orders media to strictly observe professional ethics

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Acting Executive Director of the Journalists Accreditation Board (JAB), Patrick Kipangula, has urged journalists in the country to strictly observe professional ethics in the course of their duties, warning that violations could jeopardize peace and social stability.
Speaking in Dar es Salaam during a meeting organized by the Tanzania Press Clubs Union (UTPC) in collaboration with the Government Chief Spokesperson’s Information Department, Kipangula emphasized the importance of producing news that serves the public interest.
He noted that journalists must exercise caution when reporting on sensitive issues such as political, ethnic, and religious conflicts, which may trigger unrest if not handled carefully.

“Journalists must be careful when reporting conflicts in order to protect peace and national unity. News that is not handled with caution can cause serious harm to society,” said Kipangula.
He further cautioned that some information has the potential to escalate conflicts rather than resolve them, stressing the need for thorough analysis before publishing or broadcasting news.
In addition, he reminded journalists of their responsibility to protect individual privacy, noting that there are laws safeguarding privacy rights, which must be respected at all times during journalistic work.
