ITU council will be stronger with Tanzania on board, says US

THE US Embassy has commended Tanzania for being elected as a member of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Council.

Tanzania was elected to the seat for the 2023-2026 term, being among 48 countries, out of all 193 ITU Member States that will sit in the Council for the next four years.

It is also among the 13 countries representing the Africa region in the union’s top decision-making organ.

In its congratulatory remarks, the US Embassy said Tanzania is a regional leader in digital transformation, e-government platforms, and cyber security.

“The Council will be stronger with Tanzania on it. The US looks forward to continuing our strong partnership with Tanzania through ITU,” said the embassy on its twitter handle @usembassytz.

The council is the Union’s governing body that is mandated to consider broad telecommunication policy issues to ensure that ITU activities, policies and strategies fully respond to today’s dynamic, rapidly changing telecommunications environment.

Speaking at the election, Minister for Information, Communications and Information Technology Nape Nnauye pledged the country’s commitment to spearhead socio-economic development among the member states.

He also reaffirmed Tanzania’s commitment in the ITU for the next four years it will be in the council.

“I wish to reiterate that Tanzania is committed to cooperate and share with other Member States, the ITU Secretariat and the regional offices to make ITU an eminent international body that plays an important role in enhancing socio-economic development of all member countries as members of ITU council,” said Nape
