Mayele shines, tall order for Yanga

YOUNG Africans’ Fiston Mayele proved his worth in the CAF Confederation Cup after netting his seventh goal of campaign despite his team’s 2-1 loss to USM Alger at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in the city on Sunday.

Mayele is now sure to claim the tournament’s golden boot as his closest pursuer, Ranga Chivavire, with six goals, is out of the race as his team, Marumo Gallants, have been bundled out of the tournament by Yanga in their semifinal stage.

Despite Mayele’s brilliant goal, Yanga have been handed a tall order in their return leg with USM Alger in Algiers next week as they have to win by a two-goal margin to claim the CAF silverware.

Also, the Tanzanian envoys can win the diadem by one-goal margin if they win 3-2, 4-3  or even 5-4, a situation  that gives Yanga an uphill task in Algeria.

It was a competitive game, with both sides showing heightened quality at the jam-packed Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

USM Alger began with a great form of attacking, attempting to score in the third minute through Aymen Mahious, who ran onto the ball inside the box and fired a shot that was saved.

It was a great effort but received a better save from Djigui Diarra, who tipped the ball around the post.

Yanga responded in the 15th minute through Tuisila Kisinda, who connected with a well-weighted pass around the edge of the box, aimed and shot, but USM Alger’s Oussama Benbout was alert, and saved it.

In the 29th minute of the game, Yanga defender Dickson Job was booked after fouling his USM Alger player and the referee awarded the visitors a free-kick that eventually rewarded them.

USM Alger celebrated their opener netted by Aymen Mahious in the 32nd minute, completing Brahim Benzaza’s set piece with a perfectly placed header low inside the right post following a skimpy defensive blunder to clear Benzaza set piece.

USM Alger completed the first half leading 1-0.

Just after the start of the second half, Yanga’s Kennedy Musonda latched on to an accurate pass on the edge of the box and unleashed a powerful shot, but his effort was denied by the well-positioned keeper with a stunning save.

Islam Merili of USM Alger found himself in space on the edge of the box and released a powerful shot, but Djigui Diarra thwarted him with a tremendous two-handed save.

Fiston Mayele brought excitement to the jam-packed Benjamin Mkapa Stadium after picking up a brilliant pass just outside the box, turned and released a ground shot into yawning net, giving the USM Alger goalkeeper no chance.

In just a minute, Islam Merili of USM Alger silenced Yanga fans after completing Adem Alilet’s solo effort.

As the game ended, Bernard Morrison whipped the ball in, but it failed to reach his teammates as the USM Alger defenders thwarted away the danger.

Meanwhile, through her Instagram handle, the Minister for Health, Ummy Mwalimu, confirmed that 30 fans  were injured during a stampede at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium prior to the kick off.

“So far, the Temeke Regional Referral Hospital has received 30 people who sustained injuries and one, a man aged about 40 years, was pronounced dead, ” said the Minister.

“She added that most of those wounded are doing well, with just minor injuries, and are still undergoing medications.

“The emergency services team from Muhimbili National Hospital has contacted the Temeke Regional Referral Hospital. They are on standby to receive and serve the victims who need treatment,” she concluded.
