TANZANIAN envoys; Simba and Young Africans have been placed in the same group with the continental giants Raja Casablanca and TP Mazembe, who have won the interclub titles multiple times in the past.
Raja Casablanca who are placed in group C together with Simba, have won the CAF Champions League titles three times in 1989, 1997 and 1999 and two Confederation Cup titles in 2018 and 2021.
They also won the CAF Super Cup twice, in 2000 and 2019.
TP Mazembe, who are placed with Young Africans in Group D of the CAF Confederation Cup, have won five Champions League titles in 1967, 1968, 2009, 2010 and 2015. They have also won the Confederation Cup twice in 2016 and 2017.
They also won the CAF Super Cup three times, in 2010, 2011 and 2016.
The draw released yesterday in Cairo, Egypt revealed the teams Tanzanians envoys Simba and Young Africans will face in their group stage campaigns.
The draw held from 1400-1500hrs saw Simba being placed in Group C of the CAF Champions League with Raja Casablanca, their neighbours Vipers of Uganda, and Horoya Athletic Club of Guinea.
In CAF Confederation Cup, Young Africans are in Group D with neighbours TP Mazembe of DR Congo, Union Sportive Monastirienne of Tunisia and Association Sportive du Real Bamako of Mali.
The CAF interclub group stage draws were conducted yesterday after they were initially set for November 16th this year, but CAF postponed them.
This year’s Champions League draw will mark the 25th anniversary of CAF’s most prestigious inter-club competition: the CAF Champions League, the first edition dating back to 1997.
Simba booked a slot into the group stage of the CAF Champions League courtesy of a 4-1 aggregate victory over Angolan side Clube Desportivo Primeiro de Agosto.
Young Africans progressed to the group stage of the CAF Confederation with an aggregate 1-0 victory over Club Africain.
Meanwhile, the CAF Champions League fans will witness an eye-catching Group B matches with record champions Al Ahly, Mamelodi Sundowns and Sudan’s Al Hilal drawn together. They will be joined in the group by Cameroon’s Cotonsport.
