ISOC-TZ urges youths to enhance expertise in internet governance

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Internet Society Tanzania Chapter (ISOC-TZ), through the Tanzania Internet Governance Forum (TzIGF), has called on the younger generation to deepen their expertise in internet governance.

ISOC-TZ President, Nazar Kilama said in a recent discussion that youth were not just the leaders of tomorrow but were leaders of today.

He highlighted the need to empower young people in internet governance to enable them to play a crucial role in shaping a more inclusive and accessible digital landscape.

Mr Kilama pointed out that young people have the potential to advocate for equal internet access in both rural and urban areas and to push for reduced internet package costs, ensuring that every Tanzanian can benefit from these essential services.

“If youth are empowered in internet governance and management, they can bridge the gap to ensure equitable access. Their presence in decision-making positions will streamline processes,” Mr Kilama said.

He also noted that internet service quality remains sub-optimal in certain regions, urging young people to guide policymakers in balancing efforts to ensure nationwide internet accessibility.

Ms Janeth Kahindi from TECH and Media Convergence (TMC) stressed the importance of digital space training for youth, given the increasing digitisation of the world. She explained that such training would help young people understand their online rights, responsibilities, and legal boundaries.

“It’s crucial for youth to be educated on these matters, as many are using the internet for various activities, from job creation to job searching. As the generation of tomorrow, their understanding of these issues will help secure a safer digital future,” Ms Kahindi said.

She urged stakeholders and the government to continue offering such training and encouraged fellow youth to seize opportunities to learn more about internet governance, which has become a central aspect of society.

Furthermore, Cyidion Cylivanus from the Institute of Rural Development Planning (IRDP) expressed gratitude to ISOC for the training. He stated that as internet usage grows, it should benefit youths rather than become a luxury.
