Isles intensifies Malaria fight

ZANZIBAR: THE Zanzibar government has intensified efforts to eliminate Malaria by strengthening surveillance, active case follow-up and community engagement to prevent further transmission of the disease.

The commitment was reaffirmed by the Ministry of Health through its Malaria Control Programme during a meeting with stakeholders and Malaria programme officers.

Head of Preventive Services, Dr Msanif Othman Masoud, said the government is implementing targeted interventions, including active follow-up of Malaria cases across the islands to ensure infections are detected and managed promptly.

“Our goal is to completely eliminate Malaria and this requires sustained efforts and collaboration from all stakeholders,” Dr Masoud said.

He said the government is also strengthening surveillance systems to ensure every Malaria case is identified, investigated and treated effectively, reducing the risk of further transmission.

Dr Masoud stressed that eliminating the disease requires active community participation through increased public awareness, early diagnosis and adherence to prescribed treatment.

Meanwhile, Head of the Malaria Unit in Pemba, Mr Makame Mohammed Kombo, said community cooperation has been instrumental in the progress made in controlling the disease.

“The success we have achieved in controlling Malaria is largely due to the cooperation of the people,” he said, noting that communities have embraced preventive measures and supported malaria intervention programmes.

He added that sustained collaboration between health authorities and the public will be crucial in maintaining the gains achieved and reaching the goal of malaria elimination.

Zanzibar has recorded significant progress in reducing malaria prevalence over the years, with health officials expressing confidence that continued investment in surveillance and community-based interventions will accelerate efforts to eliminate the disease.
