Iraq disaster: More than 100 killed in wedding fire

IRAQ, Nineveh Province: At least 100 people are killed and more than 150 injured in a fire that ripped through a wedding celebration in northern Iraq.

The IRCS is an independent humanitarian aid organisation in Iraq.

The newly married couple both lost their lives in the blaze, according to Ahmed Dubardani, deputy head of the Nineveh health directorate.

Iraq’s prime minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani has ordered an investigation into the fire.

He also asked officials from the Interior and Health ministeries to mobilise all efforts to provide relief to those affected by the fire, his office wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The governor of Iraq’s Nineveh Province, Najm al-Jubouri, has declared a week-long mourning period following the deadly fire that engulfed a banquet hall in the province’s Hamdaniyah district.

The Nineveh Governorate Health Department announced that at least 100 deaths and more than 150 injuries were recorded as a preliminary toll following the incident that occurred during a wedding reception on Tuesday night.
