IPU hails Tanzania as a model in gender equality for top leadership posts

ARUSHA: THE Chairperson of the Tanzania IPU Parliamentary Group, Damas Ndumbaro has said Tanzania is setting an example on gender equality and women’s participation in top leadership.
The country is currently hosting the 153rd Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly in Arusha.
Ndumbaro said Tanzania’s progress in gender equality offers lessons to countries where women remain underrepresented in senior leadership positions and that IPU itself places strong emphasis on gender equality, noting that both its President and Secretary General are women.
He made the remarks on October 5, 2026, during an interview on TBC1’s Jambo Tanzania programme ahead of the official opening of the 153rd IPU Assembly in Arusha, which brings parliamentarians together to discuss issues of global importance.

Elaborating, he said hosting the IPU Assembly is a demonstration that Tanzania is a peaceful and secure country capable of welcoming major international gatherings.
“President Samia Suluhu Hassan has continued efforts to strengthen Tanzania’s diplomatic relations with other countries while promoting democratic foundations,”he said.
The 153rd IPU Assembly officially opens in Arusha today, bringing the global parliamentary community to Tanzania for discussions expected to focus on shared challenges and strengthening cooperation among parliaments.
