IPU calls for fully participation of persons with disabilities in politics, and decision-making processes

ARUSHA: THE Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has called on parliaments worldwide to ensure the full participation of persons with disabilities in politics, leadership and decision-making processes, stressing that their involvement is essential to building peaceful, equal and inclusive societies.

The call was made today during a discussion on Inclusive Social Development for All: Parliamentary Strategies to Promote the Rights and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, held as part of the ongoing 153rd IPU Assembly in Arusha.

Speaking during the discussion, Kenya’s Special Senator for Women in the Senate, Catherine Mumma, said persons with disabilities should not be viewed merely as people in need of protection during conflicts, but should also be fully involved in post-conflict reconstruction and peacebuilding processes.

Mumma said parliaments have a responsibility to ensure that the needs of persons with disabilities are incorporated into legislation, policies and national budgets, while lawmakers should use their oversight role to hold governments accountable for implementing programmes aimed at improving the lives of the group.

She added that healthcare, education and other public services should also be designed with the needs of persons with disabilities in mind.

Meanwhile, Swiss National Council Member Christian Lohr called on IPU member parliaments to consider including persons with disabilities in parliamentary international delegations.

He said the move would increase their participation in international discussions and ensure that their voices are heard in decision-making processes affecting their lives.
