Intraparty elections win pundits accolades

DAR ES SALAAM: POLITICAL analysts have praised the recent intraparty elections held by various political parties, highlighting their importance in strengthening democratic processes and fostering political maturity in the country.
The analysts pointed out that the outcomes of the elections are likely to shape each party’s strategies and priorities, enabling them to present more coherent and relevant manifestos that resonate with public concerns.
As the policies evolve, they are expected to offer clearer choices for voters, helping them make well-informed decisions come election time.
The analysts further noted that the smooth and transparent nature of the elections demonstrates the growing commitment to democratic principles, reflecting well on the political landscape.
Political parties such as Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA), Civic United Front (CUF), and ACT-Wazalendo have already completed their internal elections.
In an exclusive interview with ‘Daily News’ yesterday, lawyer and political analyst Mr Yonah Mapury commended the recent intraparty elections, saying they illustrate political parties’ commitment to democratic values.
He said that the elections were conducted fairly, with leaders being elected through a transparent and free process.
“The elections have proved that Tanzania is evolving towards more unified political parties that engage in constructive debates and adhere to the values outlined in their constitutions,” Mr Mapury explained.
Regarding CCM, Mr Mapury noted that the party’s endorsement of presidential candidates for both the Union and Zanzibar governments was based on delegate recommendations, without any divisive disputes—a significant lesson for other political parties.

Commenting on CHADEMA’s leadership election, Mr Mapury said that the process was free and fair, with members choosing their desired chairman.
He said the fact that those who lost accepted the results amicably, demonstrated a positive sign of maturity and democratic understanding.
He further emphasised the need for political parties to focus on policies that drive national development, rather than sowing divisions and factions among the people.
Political analyst Mr Merdad Wilfred also weighed in on the elections, noting that the recent intraparty contests have attracted significant public attention, signaling the growing political maturity of the parties and the strengthening of democracy in Tanzania.
“If we can hold internal elections and remain united as political parties, it’s a clear indication that even in the general elections, the process will continue to be free and fair,” Mr Wilfred said.
He also stressed that these elections demonstrate that every Tanzanian, in their capacity, plays a role in maintaining peace and stability, with political parties playing a crucial role in peace-building.
On CCM’s endorsement for a presidential candidate, Mr Wilfred pointed out that it reflected the party’s confidence in making decisions based on its principles, thereby reinforcing true democracy.
He commended CHADEMA for conducting free and fair elections, where candidates who lost accepted the results with respect a sign of a solid understanding of democracy and the realities of both winning and losing.

On political party policies and manifestos, Mr Wilfred noted that Tanzanians expect to see continued progress in governance, democracy, and peace.
He added that party policies should be in line with the people’s needs, saying the ruling party has already made significant strides in community development.
A political analyst from the Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial Academy Dr Ahmad Sovu also praised the recent intraparty elections, calling them a sign of the strengthening and growing of democracy in Tanzania.
He attributed the successful conduct of these elections to the 4Rs Reconciliation, Resilience, Reforms, and Rebuilding developed by President Samia Suluhu Hassan, which have contributed to a free and fair electoral process within political parties.
