Innovation drives economy, safeguards heritage — Italy Envoy

DAR ES SALAAM: Innovation has been identified as a powerful driver of economic growth and a key tool in preserving national heritage, with Italy urging greater investment in creative industries.

Speaking during the 10th anniversary of Italian innovation celebrations in Dar es Salaam, Italian Ambassador Giuseppe Sean Coppola said product innovation plays a central role in linking a nation’s culture, history and identity while boosting economic development.

He noted that innovation enhances the value of locally produced goods, making them more competitive and attractive in both domestic and international markets, ultimately increasing incomes for producers and contributing to national economic growth.

The envoy explained that the exhibition aimed at showcasing the capacity of designers to create and develop high-quality products with global appeal, reflecting Italy’s commitment to promoting creativity as part of its national identity.

During the event, Rangi Gallery unveiled a range of uniquely crafted glass products, demonstrating a blend of modern innovation and the use of available resources.

Ambassador Coppola further emphasised that the initiative, championed by Italian leadership, promotes the concept of “rethink, redesign and recreate” in art and production sectors. He stressed that sustainable innovation can also address environmental challenges through recycling and reuse of materials.

For her part, Rangi Gallery Director Norna Albou said the company collaborates with Italian designers to produce distinctive items made from recycled glass and bottles.

She explained that through such innovation, waste materials are transformed into high-value products with strong market appeal.

Ms Albou called on Tanzanian artists and designers to actively participate in innovation-driven projects, noting that the sector offers significant opportunities for employment, income generation and environmental conservation.

She added that international collaboration in innovation can help nurture local talent and elevate it to global standards.
