INEC applauds media, calls for balanced coverage

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on media outlets across the country to uphold integrity and adhere to professional standards by providing accurate, balanced and reliable information while ensuring equal access and visibility for all political parties ahead of the 2025 General Election.

Speaking yesterday in Dar es Salaam during a meeting with media editors, INEC Chairperson Justice Jacob Mwambegele stressed the Commission’s commitment to delivering an inclusive, transparent, free and fair electoral process that guarantees a level playing field for all political actors.

“The Commission will oversee the entire electoral process in strict accordance with the Constitution, national laws and established electoral regulations. Our goal is to ensure that the 2025 General Election is credible and trusted by all, and we recognise the media as a key partner in achieving this,” said Justice Mwambegele.

He explained that the Commission has been actively engaging key stakeholders, including editors and journalists, with plans to provide them with specialised training to enhance their capacity in educating the public about the electoral process.

“We have great confidence in your cooperation, especially given your active participation in updating the Permanent Voter Register (PVR),” he said.

The INEC Chairperson further encouraged editors to familiarise themselves with electoral laws, regulations and guidelines to ensure their reporting and participation align with proper procedures.

He also urged media professionals to use their platforms to promote peace and discourage rhetoric or actions that could undermine public order during the campaign period, particularly in light of rising political tensions from candidates with limited tolerance for dissent.

Referring to the recently concluded voter registration exercise, which ended on July 4, 2025, Justice Mwambegele expressed his gratitude to the media for their support in informing the public and helping the Commission reach a significant number of eligible voters.

Justice Mwambegele explained the importance of the meeting with editors as a platform for exchanging information and experiences, which he said would contribute to better election preparedness and help mitigate potential challenges in the process.

He added that the Commission has made substantial preparations for the 2025 General Election and that its success depends significantly on the cooperation of media professionals in effectively disseminating information and raising public awareness.

For his part, INEC Director of Elections, Mr Ramadhani Kailima, reminded media outlets of their responsibility to provide equal opportunities for all political parties and candidates to communicate their messages to the electorate.

He also urged journalists to avoid misinformation and adhere to professional ethics, especially by promoting peace before, during and after the election.

“The media is the first line of defence against electoral misinformation. You have a duty to ensure that the public receives accurate, truthful and timely information,” said Mr Kailima.
