How Tanzania-China friendship blossom in Tennis

IF you are a keen observer and fan of sports, you will not forget the latest table tennis events in Paris 2024 that delivered a thrilling showcase of skill, strategy and resilience, solidifying China’s dominance in the sport while also highlighting emerging talents and memorable performances from other nations.

Overall, China dominated the table tennis events, winning a total of five medals, including four gold and one silver. This extraordinary performance not only maintained China’s longstanding dominance in the sport but also highlighted the new generation of players ready to carry the torch forward.

Given the pace set, Tanzania, a friend of China has something to borrow here not only in the political-diplomatic realm, but also sports diplomacy in international relations with the country that builds bridges through the power of sports.

Sports have long been a unifying force, transcending borders and cultures. In recent years, the field of international relations has recognised the immense potential of sports in fostering diplomatic relations and promoting peace.

This emerging field, known as sports diplomacy, has gained significant momentum as governments, organisations and individuals increasingly recognise its effectiveness in bridging divides and generating positive change.

Commenting on this during Tanzania-China ‘Mashinano ya Kirafiki ya Mpira wa Tennis-Kombe la Kirafiki kati ya China na Tanzania 2024’ Chinese ambassador to Tanzania Chen Mingjian said sports exchanges have always played a positive role in promoting understanding between the people in China and Tanzania.

“Let us join hands to bring the bilateral cooperation in sports forward to a higher level in the future,” said the Chinese envoy.

By leveraging the universal language of sports, nations can engage in cooperative activities that promote understanding, mutual respect and collaboration. This unique approach to diplomacy has the power to transcend political differences and create lasting connections between countries.

She further said that such sport is an implementation of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s proposition to 10 partnership actions to be implemented in the next three years, which cover areas such as trade prosperity, industrial chain cooperation, connectivity, development cooperation, health, agriculture and livelihoods.

Presiding over the competition, Neema Msitha, Secretary General of the National Sports Council (NSC) said that Tanzania will further strengthen ties with China in sports as the two countries take part in the third ‘China-Tanzania Table tennis Tournament’ friendship competition.

She added: “We have had a strong bond created between Tanzania -China friendship and collaboration particularly in the sports sector. We are not ready to lose it,” she said.

She further said that China has supported table tennis sports with equipment hence promoting the field in Tanzania and Africa in general.

According to her, the founding fathers the late Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, and Chairman Mao Zedong established and built a solid foundation of the Tanzania-China friendship and solidarity.

Sports diplomacy in conflict resolution

Sports diplomacy also plays a crucial role in conflict resolution and peace building efforts. In situations where traditional diplomacy may face challenges, sports can serve as a neutral ground for dialogue and reconciliation.

Sporting events, such as friendly matches or tournaments, bring people together and create opportunities for dialogue, breaking down barriers and fostering a sense of common humanity.

Use of sports diplomacy for development

Furthermore, sports diplomacy has proven to be a powerful tool in addressing social issues and promoting development. By harnessing the popularity of sports, governments and organisations can raise awareness about important causes, such as gender equality, education, health and social inclusion.

Sporting events and campaigns can be used as platforms to advocate for positive change and mobilise communities towards achieving shared goals.

Examples of sports diplomacy

One prominent example of sports diplomacy in action is the Olympic Games. The Olympic movement, with its emphasis on fair play, unity and friendship, serves as a platform for nations to come together and compete in a spirit of camaraderie. The games provide a stage for athletes from all corners of the globe to showcase their skills, while also fostering cultural exchange and dialogue among participants and spectators alike.

The range of sports diplomacy

In addition to major sporting events, sports diplomacy takes various forms, ranging from grassroots initiatives to high-level diplomatic exchanges. One such initiative is the sports exchange program, where athletes, coaches and sports administrators from different countries come together to share expertise, train and compete.

These exchanges not only enhance sporting skills but also promote cross-cultural understanding and forge lasting friendships.

Sports diplomacy is a dynamic field within international relations that harnesses the power of sports to foster dialogue, build relationships and address global challenges. Through sports, nations can transcend political differences and forge connections based on shared values and interests. As the field continues to grow, it offers promising career opportunities for individuals passionate about using sports as a vehicle for positive change on the global stage.
