How milling machines alms spark agro‑revolution
THE Qatar Charity in Tanzania has donated ten milling machines to the Busiya Chiefdom in Kishapu District, Shinyanga Region, one for each of the ten wards in Busiya.
This timely gift promises to transform the lives of local peasants, boost food‑processing capacity, create jobs, cut post‑harvest losses and increase household incomes.
At the handover ceremony, Mohammed Ibrahim, Qatar Charity Tanzania Projects Coordinator, explained the ripple effects: Giving local farmers the ability to add value to their own produce, which in turn draws better prices at market.
He emphasised that as Tanzania charts its industrialisation path, simple yet effective technologies like milling machines can become catalysts for rural development by generating employment, reducing waste and stimulating socio‑economic uplift from the ward level up to national development.
Imagine local peasants in each ward bringing harvested maize, millet or sorghum and walking away with freshly milled flour or mealie meal, ready for sale or household use. That means no more walking long distances to far‑off mills, no more spoil‑ age and critical extra income staying within the community. Jobs will sprout, not only mill operators but loaders, packagers, even hand‑tores sorting grains.
The income earned can finance school fees, health care, or seed purchases for the next planting season. At the ceremony, the newly installed Ntemi Makwaia III, Mr Austin Makani, being the 24ᵗʰ Chief of Busiya, accepted the machines on be‑ half of the community, noting that this support arrived at the perfect moment, just ahead of harvest season. He confirmed that the machines will be distributed across the ten wards: Ibadakuli, Kolandoto, Itilima, Talaga, Ukenyenge, Mwawe‑ ja, Kiloleli, Ngofila, Mwa‑ mashele and Lagana.
In the course, he urged recipients to use the equipment responsibly and sustainably. He shared that revenue from milling will fund the annual rich cultural festival, Sanjo Ya Busiya and assist in building a women’s museum to preserve Busiya history and attract cultural tourism.
Domestic and international tourists visiting the museum would provide another income stream that promotes the chiefdom and its cultural heritage.
When Chief Makwaia III spoke, three other Makwaia family representatives namely Patricia, Beatrice and George were present. While they were not quoted verbatim, we can imagine each offering heartfelt thanks, like: “We are thrilled!
