TANZANIA: IN THE heart of a remote village of Itebula in Uvinza, Kigoma, Tanzania, a young man named Ruhigo Mayala is a live testimony of how agricultural revolution is possible right into the grassroots.
His journey, filled with perseverance, innovation and the transformative power of education, showcases the incredible impact of the Kilimo-Viwanda Scholarship programme launched by Serengeti Breweries Limited (SBL).
In his testimony he says: “After finishing my certificate studies, I couldn’t continue due to financial hardships. I had nowhere and nothing to do. Then came the Serengeti Breweries that offered us the scholarship to study-it was a turning point in my life. It gave me hope and a chance to pursue my dreams of furthering my education.
His case represents hundreds of young people in the viallge, especially at the Igabiro Training Institute of Agriculture (ITIA), where Ruhigo not only gained academic knowledge, but also practical skills and invaluable mentorship. With his Diploma certificate at hand, he returned to his village with a mission: to apply modern farming techniques and inspire his community.
His first project was to cultivate one acre of rice using the innovative methods he had learned. The results were astounding to him. “I harvested about 20 sacks of rice from that acre. Even my neighbours couldn’t believe it and were curious to know how I did it,” he shares with a smile.
The success of his initial harvest changed everything. It provided Ruhigo with the capital to expand his farming operations and further invest in his land. He increased his cultivated area, stored his harvests to sell at higher prices’ seasons, and began buying crops from other farmers to sell for profit. This entrepreneurial spirit not only improved Ruhigo’s financial stability, but also set a powerful example for others in his village.
Determined to make an even greater impact, Ruhigo decided to further his education. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Co-operative Management and Accounting at Moshi Co-operative University. His vision for the future is both ambitious and transformative.
“I intend to modernise agriculture in my community by introducing irrigation schemes in Nguruka Ward to maximise farmers’ output so that they can benefit more from their efforts,” Ruhigo says passionately.
He plans to build a solar-powered well to provide a reliable water supply for irrigation, enabling the cultivation of various crops such as maize, sorghum, wheat and cereals. “We want to use technology in agriculture to empower our farmers.”
Ruhigo’s plans go beyond individual success; they encompass a broader goal of community development. He aims to establish a direct link between local farmers and Serengeti Breweries, ensuring a stable market for their produce. “The farmers can be guaranteed a market for their crops, which will help them increase output and improve their living standards,” he explains.

Ruhigo Mayala’s journey from hardship to agricultural innovation is a compelling story of resilience and determination. Through the Kilimo-Viwanda Scholarship program, SBL has empowered him to overcome his challenges and become a catalyst for change in his community. His dedication and vision are inspiring, showcasing how education and opportunity can transform lives and uplift entire communities.
Moreover, Ruhigo has ambitious plans to unite local farmers by encouraging them to form a cooperative group. He believes that by coming together, they can collectively discuss their issues and advocate for their rights with a stronger, unified voice. This cooperative would serve as a platform for farmers to share knowledge, address common challenges, and negotiate for fair prices and better market access.
Back in 2020, SBL introduced the Kilimo-Viwanda Scholarship to empower bright students from local farming communities. The scholarships cover full tuition fees and offer coaching and mentorship from SBL staff and local farmers. By the end of 2023, a total of 300 scholarships had been awarded.
The Igabiro Training Institute of Agriculture (ITIA) is one of the four institutions in the country that SBL has partnered with in providing training opportunities to recipients of its scholarships. Other colleges include Maria Goreti Agricultural College in Iringa, Kaole Wazazi College of Agriculture, and Kilacha Agricultural College in Moshi. Forty students have been awarded scholarships this year.
Ruhigo’s success is a beacon of hope, demonstrating that with the right support, individuals can break the cycle of poverty, drive progress, and create a brighter future for themselves and those around them. His story is a powerful reminder of the profound impact that one person can have when given the tools and support to succeed.
