Home Affairs Ministry issues warning against immoral acts that violate Tanzanian traditions

DODOMA: TANZANIA’S Home Affairs Minister, Patrobas Katambi, has issued a stern warning against activities that he said violate Tanzania customs, traditions, and moral values, including prostitution, the operation of brothels, and relationships considered unlawful under the country’s laws.
Katambi said Gender Desks within law enforcement agencies should take firm action against anyone found engaging in such activities in order to safeguard the moral and social foundations of Tanzanian society.
The minister made the remarks in Parliament on June 15, 2026, while responding to a question from Katavi Member of Parliament Thomas Maganga, who sought clarification on the government’s position regarding individuals involved in same-sex relationships.

Katambi emphasized that the government will continue to enforce existing laws and ensure that appropriate legal measures are taken in accordance with the country’s legal framework.
Earlier, Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Ayoub Mohammed Mahamoud, responding to the same question, stated that same-sex relations are classified as a criminal offense under Tanzanian law.
He added that any individual found to have committed such an offense should be subjected to legal proceedings in accordance with the country’s laws and established legal procedures.
