Hockey body unveils season’s priorities  

TANZANIA Hockey Association’s newly elected office bearers have highlighted major tasks ahead of them as steps towards the massive development of the game.

Kaushik Doshi, the association’s Chairman told the ‘Daily News on Saturday’ yesterday that the one of the tasks is National Sports Council’s (NSC) directive to revise their constitution.

Doshi, who is also a Board Member of Africa Hockey Confederation, also highlighted the second task as to look into the possibility of acquiring the first ever hockey turf.

He said they have plans to put in place hockey turf through assistance from stakes holders as at the moment there is not a single hockey turf available in the country which is setback for hockey.

“It’s very important to have a hockey turf in order to boost hockey and it will also improve the game and standard of players who shall able to compete with other hockey players on an international level.

“And furthermore, at later stage, we can also host international hockey tournament under the banner of Africa Hockey,” he insisted.

Other plans, according to Doshi, are to work on the goals and objectives including youth development plans in order to take hockey to newer heights.

NSC Officer Benson Chacha who supervised the THA general election in Arusha was quoted as saying that hockey constitution needs to be completely revised.

“Constitution is an important tool which safe guards all the interest of hockey and implementation of development plans, to adhere to that you need to revise it,” he added.

He further stressed on Anti-doping in sports, which is very common in the world and has asked the members present to be aware of it.

THA conducted the general election under the supervision of a committee comprising of 4 officers from National Sports Council.

All eligible candidates went through screening process and thereafter they voted.

During election 10 posts were to be filled up as there were no other candidates besides 10 people who took the forms, according to Doshi.

“Fortunately, all 10 candidates passed and were engaged  in voting,” he said.

However, the chairman of the Election Committee named Doshi the association’s Chairman.

Doshi was THA secretary before during the reign of outgoing chairman Abraham Sykes who decided not to be re-elected.

Vice chairman post went to Balraj Mudher, Secretary Frank Lusawa, treasurer Gurtaj Bhogal while the assistant secretary elect is Smitesh Vadgama.

Those elected at committee members are Deep Visram, Tatu Kahumbira, Mark Sequeira, Varinderpal Bhamra and Mark Fernandes.

Doshi thanked NSC for guiding the election smoothly and all the representatives who were present during in the election for their precious time and support rendered.
