DAR ES SALAAM: NATIONAL Under-19 cricket team will touch down in Dar es Salaam today, returning as champions after securing a coveted spot in the 2026 ICC U-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup.
The team’s remarkable achievement comes after they triumphed in the Africa Qualifier held in Lagos, Nigeria, with a dominant 98-run victory over Sierra Leone in the final group match.
The team’s arrival was confirmed by the Chairman of the Tanzania Cricket Association, Balakrishnan Sreekumar, who shared the exciting news with the public. He stated, “Our Under-19 boys, who did us proud, will land on Tuesday at 03:10 AM. We urge as many cricket lovers as possible to come to the airport to welcome them back as heroes.”
Tanzania’s journey to qualification was nothing short of impressive, with the team remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament. The historic win means that Tanzania will join 12 other nations in the finals of the 2026 ICC U-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup, which will be held in Zimbabwe and Namibia. The other teams that have already qualified are Zimbabwe, Australia, Bangladesh, England, Ireland, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and the West Indies. Four additional spots will be decided through regional qualifiers.
In the tournament’s group stage, the 16 teams will be divided into four groups. The top three teams from each group will advance to the Super Six stage, with the fourth-placed teams in Groups A and D facing each other and the fourth-placed teams in Groups B and C doing the same in a placement stage.
In the Super Six stage, the top three teams from Groups A and D will be combined with the top three from Groups B and C, carrying forward their points, wins and net run rate. Each team will then face two opponents from the corresponding group who finished in different positions. The top two teams from each Super Six group will qualify for the semi-finals.
