Handeni seeks solace in a clean energy campaign

HANDENI: A clean cooking energy campaign has reached residents at markets and bus stations in Handeni District, Tanga, as part of government efforts to promote safe and sustainable energy use among citizens.
The campaign, conducted by the Ministry of Energy in partnership with the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), aims to ensure that 80 percent of Tanzanians use clean cooking energy by 2034.

During the outreach, the awareness team visited markets and bus hubs, engaging with residents and traders to identify the types of energy they currently use and educate them on the benefits of switching to clean cooking fuels.
Some traders in Chogo Market and the main town market admitted that they use gas when in a hurry, but still rely on other non-clean energy sources for regular cooking.

The campaign team emphasized the importance of everyday use of clean cooking energy, including gas and electricity, warning that unclean fuels pose risks to both health and the environment.
Citizens were also trained on the practical use of clean energy cookstoves and electric stoves, demonstrating how these technologies can cook meals quickly and cost-effectively.

A highlight of the campaign was giving residents the chance to taste meals prepared using gas and electric stoves, which many admitted were delicious, dispelling the common misconception that food cooked with clean energy lacks flavor compared to traditional charcoal or wood-fired methods.
