GST pavilion captivates Slovak envoy at the Nane Nane Agricultural Exhibition

DODOMA: A representative of the Embassy of the Slovak Republic, Pavol Popjak, has toured the Geological Survey of Tanzania (GST) pavilion at the ongoing Nane Nane Agricultural Exhibition, where he learned about the institution’s role in advancing the country’s mining sector.

During the visit to the exhibition at the Dr John Malecela Grounds in Nzuguni, Popjak was briefed on GST’s core functions, including geological and mineral exploration, laboratory services, mineral sample analysis and the management of geological data used to support investment and sustainable development in the mining industry.

He also received detailed information on tanzanite, the precious gemstone found exclusively in Tanzania, and its contribution to the country’s economy through value addition in the mineral sector.

Speaking after the tour, Popjak said Slovakia also has a long history of mineral extraction, noting that the country is particularly known for its red garnet, a gemstone widely used in jewellery manufacturing as well as in industrial applications such as grinding and cutting because of its hardness.

He, however, said red garnet production in Slovakia is relatively small compared to other key minerals mined in the country, including copper, gold and magnesite.
