Govt yet to declare primary education to end at Standard VI

THE government has maintained that it has yet to declare that the primary education will cease at Standard Six as it insisted it is still in the process of reviewing the Tanzania Education and Training Policy, 2014.

Equally it said that all stakeholders would be involved before the final draft.

The stance was made here by the Minister of Education Science and Technology, Professor Adolph Mkenda during a colorful ceremony for the launching of the historic book titled: ‘Continuity with Vision: The Roadmap to Success for President Samia Suluhu Hassan.’

There has been public uproar over making basic and compulsory education up to Form Four, while Standard Seven to be scrapped so that primary school pupils would switch to secondary education after completion of Standard Six.

However, the minister was quick to point out that there was no cause for alarm as the government was yet to issue a statement regarding the same.

He said the process was all inclusive and that it would leave no one behind in the collection of opinions.

The newly launched book advised President Samia to focus and pay attention to the implementation of agricultural activities and projects so as to ensure growth of economic development at rural areas and national level.

Speaking at the event, the Vice Principal of the Institute of Rural Development and Planning (IRDP), Professor Provident Dimoso, said that they had researched on how agricultural activities can enhance the growth of rural development and that the findings show that if agricultural activities would be implemented successful it would make changes on rural and national economic developments.

“We have researched on rural development and found out that most citizens live in rural areas  and they depend on agricultural activities and Tanzania has almost 44 million hectors which supports agricultural activities, if we use them strategically we will help catalyze developments in rural areas” said Prof Dimoso.

The findings also show that more than 70 percent of rural citizens’ income comes from agriculture, 100 percent of food security is enhanced with agriculture but also 27.7 percent of GDP is resulted from agricultural activities.

The writers of this book, especially the IRDP who based on the research on rural development said that if the Head of State will strategically implement agricultural activities especially by constructing and opening local agricultural products processing factories will catalyze the growth of rural economic and developments.

Prof  Dimoso said that agricultural products processing factories will equally increase employment opportunities, ensure market, increase agricultural products values, increase life of products in the market and it will ensure reasonable price of the products.

The Continuity with Vision: The Roadmap to Success for President Samia Suluhu Hassan book which consists of 624 pages and 29 chapters was researched and written by 45 Scholars from different Tanzanian higher learning institutions.

Among the writers of the book include Scholars from University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM), University of Dodoma (UDOM), Institute of Finance Management (IFM), Institute of Rural Development and Planning (IRDP), Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC), Bank of Tanzania (BOT), Zanzibar Social Security Fund (ZSSF), CRDB Bank, and the Kagera Regional Administrative Office.

During his speech, the Minister of Education, Science and Technology who represented the Prime Minister, Kassim Majaliwa said the government had established a special program aimed to attract more Tanzanians to take part in the book writing sector.

To fuel the move, through the ministry, the government has organized a special program, dubbed “Mwalimu Nyerere award, a tailor made platform for awarding local innovative authors.
