Govt wants National Ladies Golf Team to clinch title
THE government has tasked the National Ladies Golf Team to bring home title as they depart today for Kigali, Rwanda for the East and All Africa Challenge Trophy (ECAACT) golf tournament.
The tournament tees off from Wednesday to November third this year at the Kigali Golf Resort & Villas in Rwanda’s Capital City, Kigali.
Handing over the National Flag for the Tanzanian envoys ready for the Rwanda event in Dar es Salaam on Saturday, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Sports, Gerson Msigwa, called on the golf team to recount what they did in the previous event held in Uganda, where they claimed the title.
The national team consists of experienced players, led by Captain Hawa Wanyeche and made up of Madina Iddi and Neema Olomi, while Vicky Elias received her first call after clinching this year’s Tanzania Ladies Open.
The team will leave the country today accompanied by Tanzania Golf Union (TLGU) President, Queen Siraki, while treasurer Joyce Ndyetabura will join them two days later.
The last event held in Uganda also saw Tanzanian heroine, Madina win an award following her impressive performance.
“We are aware that in the last event held in Uganda, you finished overall winner, whereas Madina took the individual category’s medal. Now you are going to Rwanda as the defending champion, which means more commitment and even harder fighting.
“President Samia Suluhu Hassan appreciates sports very much. She gave six return air tickets to the team, so that you can travel and reclaim the title. I am sure you will achieve that,” he said.
Msigwa insisted that the team should go there and win titles to put the country into the spotlight again and bring joy to the president.
The National Sports Council (NSC) Executive Secretary, Neema Msitha also commended the team for a job well done.
Msitha said that the Tanzania Ladies Golf Team has been doing a wonderful job in terms of promoting the country when it comes to international assignments and that her office works close to them to ensure they stay intact.
Tanzania Ladies golf team, ‘Tanzania One’ also vowed to bring honour to the country.
Siraki thanked the government, especially President Samia, for the support and for ensuring the team is in good health and looking forward to defending their title.
Participating teams are Malawi, Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Burundi and Tanzania.
