Govt touts need to equip designers

THE government has said equipping designers with skills will motivate them conduct more innovations and become a catalyst for social and economic development.

The remarks were made recently by the Minister for Culture, Arts and Sports, Ambassador Pindi Chana at the allocation of royalties’ ceremony to innovators.

“The provision of training to designers will motivate to do more innovation and put Tanzania on the map and become a catalyst for social and economic development,” she said.

During the event, the Business Registration and Licensing Agency (BRELA) and the office of the Zanzibar Business and Property Registration Agency (BPRA) signed a cooperation agreement to implement the Creative Property Training Centre project in the country.

Other institutions that signed the agreement are the Office of Copyright Society of Zanzibar (COSOZA) and Copyright Society of Tanzania (COSOTA).

BRELA Chief Executive Officer, Mr Godfrey Nyaisa, said that the government recognises the great need for education and training on Creative Ownership to ensure that the innovations that continue to be made are protected and generate a decent income for innovators.

“The establishment of the Creative Property Training Center in this country is a sincere commitment of the government to ensure that designers benefit from their work as well as being protected.

The training will be provided to all artists, writers and designers in copyright and creative property issues,” said Mr Nyaisa.

Mr Nyaisa said the purpose of the training center is to create the arts, music rights awareness and a better understanding of creators’ rights.

He said that the BRELA, COSOZA, COSOTA and PBRA early submitted applications to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) for the establishment of the training centre.

“Currently Tanzania and WIPO are making a procedure to assess the needs in the country and also in the implementation of this project. Thereafter, the institutions in charge of Intellectual Property issues will provide experts to facilitate the provision of relevant training,” he said.

Either Mr Nyaisa commended all innovators for continuing to work and create various creative works in art and written works and to ensure that they earn their own income and the nation as a whole.
