Govt to expand education infrastructure

THE government will continue to improve and provide better learning infrastructures for vocational training, tertiary colleges and higher education learning institutions, President Samia Suluhu Hassan has said.

She issued the statement while wishing the best of luck to Form Six students, who are sitting for Advance Certificate of Secondary Education Examination (ACSEE) that started on Tuesday across the country.

Dr Samia prayed for good health to all candidates, so that they can complete and pass well in order to qualify for their next academic journey.

“All the best to my children who are starting their form six national examinations today (yesterday). I believe you are well prepared for this crucial step in the youth academic journey,” she said via her official twitter account, adding, “The government will continue to provide a better learning environment for vocational training, tertiary colleges and higher education learning institutions.”

The number of Form Six candidates who sit for this year’s ACSEE has increased to 106,995 from 95, 955 registered last year.

This is equivalent to a 11.46 per cent increase, with the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA) Executive Secretary Dr Said Ally Mohamed saying a total of 96,914 candidates are school, while 10,041 are private sitters.

Out of the school candidates, 53,324 are boys and 43,590 are girls, estimated as 55 per cent and 45 per cent respectively.

Dr Mohamed further said: “Out of the number in school, some 181 candidates are with special needs, 114 have low vision, 14 blind, 28 with physical impairment and one with intellectual impairment.”

Elaborating, he noted that in the private candidates’ number, some 6,248 are boys (estimated as 62 per cent) and 3, 793 (equivalent to 38 per cent) are girls, adding that they will sit for the exams in 257 centres that have been prepared for them.

In comparison to last year, Form Six candidates who sat for the examination were 85,531 registered as school candidates and 10,424 being the private ones.

The increase in the number of candidates to sit for the Form Six exams comes as part of the government’s efforts to provide secondary education to all as well as the construction of more secondary schools across the country.

During the implementation of Five-Year Development Plan II, the government increased the number of secondary schools’ classrooms from 115,665 in 2015 to 136,292 in 2020. Also, the number of secondary schools increased from 4,708 in 2015 to 5,402 in 2020.

Recently Dr Samia assured that not a single student will miss an opportunity to join secondary school due to the lack of classrooms.

She said the government has managed to construct a total of 8,000 fully furnished classrooms for secondary schools countrywide.

In her twitter account, she said: “This historic achievement will bring relief for at least 400,000 students. In less than two years of President Samia in office, the government has surpassed the target of constructing classrooms for secondary schools by 198 per cent.

Going by the Third National Five-Year Development Plan (FYDP-III) being implemented between 2021/22 and 2025/26, the government planned to construct 4,040 classrooms for secondary schools across the country.

But, last year alone, the government built 8,000 new classrooms, which are already in use this year.

Buildings, classrooms, laboratories and equipment- education infrastructure – are crucial elements of learning environments in schools and universities. There is strong evidence that high-quality infrastructure facilitates better instruction, improves student outcomes and reduces dropout rates, among other benefits.
