Govt tightens rules on international schools’ registration

COAST REGION: THE Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has directed international schools operating in the country to register under the government’s education systems and guidelines to ensure compliance with legal and quality standards.
The directive was issued by Chief Executive of the Agency for the Development of Educational Management (ADEM), Dr Maulid Maulid, who represented the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Prof Carolyne Nombo, during the closing of a four-day training for owners of international schools held in Kibaha Municipality.
Dr Maulid said registration is essential for the recognition of education offered by international schools, noting that institutions must align with the country’s education framework and regulatory systems.
“Owners of these schools must register under established education systems so that the education they provide is recognised and meets quality standards that are competitive internationally while adhering to our national curriculum,” he said.
He added that international schools are required to register with relevant authorities, including the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA), and comply with accreditation and quality assurance procedures.
Dr Maulid said adherence to the national education policy is critical in guiding teaching and learning processes, as well as ensuring consistency in education delivery across institutions. He further noted that school curricula should align with the National Development Vision 2050 to equip students with knowledge and skills that reflect the country’s development priorities.

“Their curricula should align with Vision 2050, which emphasises quality education that supports national development,” he said.
One of the participants, Mr Joshua John from Renie International Schools, said the training had enhanced his understanding of financial management and regulatory compliance in school operations.
“I have gained a clear understanding of how to run our schools while observing legal procedures and guidelines we are required to follow,” he said.
The training, organised by the Tanzania School Leadership Institute in collaboration with the Ministry, brought together school owners, head teachers, accountants and institutional leaders.
