Govt targets irrigation, markets to boost Monduli agriculture
ARUSHA: THE government has pledged to address irrigation, water, market and farm-input challenges facing farmers and livestock keepers in Monduli district as it moves to unlock the area’s agricultural potential.
Agriculture Minister Daniel Chongolo said priority would be given to projects capable of increasing production and improving household incomes, including the completion of the 17-bn/- Mto wa Mbu irrigation scheme and construction of a modern market at Losirwa.
Mr Chongolo made the commitment while addressing thousands of residents at a public rally held at Losirwa Market in Esilalei Ward.
“Your concerns have been received. The ministry will work on the construction of the modern Losirwa Market and ensure the irrigation scheme is completed to support farmers,” he said.
He explained that expanding irrigation infrastructure and protecting water sources would help communities increase crop production while sustaining livestock keeping, two of the district’s main economic activities.

The minister, who also serves as Arusha regional development patron, said the government would continue to prioritise projects that address communities’ most pressing needs and deliver tangible improvements to their livelihoods.
For his part, the Monduli legislator Joseph Copiriano said residents appreciated the government’s efforts to expand social services and implement development projects but called for more reliable access to fertiliser, water and roads.
He also urged authorities to provide livestock keepers with more training on pasture management to improve livestock production.
On thenother hand Mr Chongolo affirmed that the Ministry of Agriculture and its institutions would follow up on the concerns raised by residents.
He urged communities to protect public infrastructure and water sources, warning that safeguarding such resources was essential to sustaining development gains.
During his visit, Mr Chongolo also toured Manyara Secondary School, which has more than 1,800 students, where he inaugurated a new boys’ dormitory aimed at improving the learning environment.
