Govt releases 23m/- to address flood damage in Kilosa

MOROGORO: THE Government has released 23m/- out of the 67m/- requested by Kilosa District in Morogoro Region to address infrastructure damage and provide relief to residents of villages affected by ongoing heavy rains.

Prime Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba announced the support during his visit to Morogoro Region, where he toured Tindika Village to convey condolences to flood victims in Masanze and Tindiga villages, Kilosa District, recently.

Dr Nchemba said the government is committed to finding a permanent solution to the recurring floods that have continued to cause hardship to Kilosa residents almost every rainy season.

He said the government has already started taking long-term measures to address the challenge by initiating the construction of water control dams aimed at preventing floods from causing disasters and destroying infrastructure. Morogoro Regional Commissioner Mr Adam Malima thanked President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan for releasing the funds as a gesture of sympathy to flood victims in the affected areas.

He explained that the 23m/- received is an initial disbursement out of the 67m/- requested to address infrastructure damage and disaster response for villagers affected by the ongoing rains in the district.

Mr Malima said floods in the region have repeatedly caused extensive damage to property, homes and infrastructure, adding that the construction of dams is a crucial step towards safeguarding the welfare and livelihoods of Kilosa residents.

For his part, Kilosa District Commissioner Mr Shaka Hamdu Shaka said four divisions have been affected, with 140 households comprising 501 residents losing their homes, while 408 households have had their residential areas damaged.

He added that five people have lost their lives as a result of the heavy rains currently affecting parts of the country. Mr Shaka said the district government, in collaboration with various stakeholders, has taken initial measures to assist flood victims, including providing temporary shelter and humanitarian assistance such as food, bedding and medical services.

In a separate development, the district commissioner thanked President Dr Samia for dispatching a special delegation led by Prime Minister Dr Nchemba to Kilosa District to assess the damage, provide comfort to the affected communities and issue directives following the flood disaster, which has also disrupted transport and communication infrastructure.
